Then, too, there is the hidden benefit that they are also creatively useful. Many hobbies involve a form of artist-brain mulling that leads to enormous creative breakthroughs. When I have screenwriting students stuck at the midpoint of act two I ask them to please go do their household mending. They usually balk, offended by such a mundane task, but sewing has a nice way of mending up plots. Gardening is another hobby I often assign to creativity students. When someone is panicked halfway across the bridge into a new life, repotting plants into larger and better containers quite literally grounds that person and gives him or her a sense of expansion.
The it, of course, is that left brain of yours, just waiting for a chance to come back in and tell you what it thinks about all this drawing stuff. Keep it out of your life for a while. Try the same exercise, but with a household object, like a corkscrew or a pair of scissors. Pick an object with a complicated shape that will require the same careful looking and relating to shapes.
Most things in your life came in a box. That box sat on the table or the floor before the object was taken out of it. It might take a little pushing or prodding, but that object would fit back inside. Visualize your object inside a box. You can even draw the box in lightly to make sure it is sitting at the correct angle. Then, simply draw the object inside the box and you will have it where you want it. Try it
Using the path tool (something you just have to learn because you want the control), I basically cut out the whole body of my design. Silver is always a good color to render because it is neutral and reduces hard reflections that could take away from the design. I picked a medium grey with just a blue hue in it. This layer is on top of the one with the tire and glass color. It is very important to organize your layers. It will make your life easier, especially if you need to do some changes later on.
It pays in the long run to hire models, though there is always the temptation to save money. The danger in using clips from magazines is that the material is usually copyrighted. Advertisers pay movie stars for the privilege of using their photos. Both the star and the advertiser will resent having them swiped for another advertiser. Your client will not be happy about it either. The same is true of fashion models who have been paid for their services. You cannot expect to use them for your own purposes. Practice from clips, but don't try to sell your copies as originals. Once you learn to draw heads, it will be your life-long interest to portray character.
Drawing takes time and practice, but after you acquire the skill, drawing can fill your life with something to do forever. In our society of immediate gratification, it's hard to wait for a lifetime of practice before you get started. Good news. This chapter offers a number of quick ideas to make drawing easy and painless. (If this chapter really sparks your interest in drawing or you want more in-depth instruction, grab a copy of Drawing For Dummies by Brenda Hoddinott Wiley .)
You will find certain subjects easier to draw than others. For instance, you may have a knack for drawing faces but feel you can't draw a building in perspective to save your life. When you don't feel comfortable with a certain subject, you will probably try to avoid it, but then you will not gain experience working with that subject. Challenge yourself give some of the lessons you may deem more difficult a chance. You might even try some lessons more than once, then compare the results from your first attempt with your last. I predict that you will be amazed at the improvement in your drawing skills. You can draw all of these examples with your 4H, HB and 4B pencils. Use the 4H and HB pencils for the light and medium values and the 4B pencil for the darkest values.
We believe that drawing makes life richer, every single day. Drawing is a skill that opens up the world, and so it can put you in touch with the balances and beauties of nature. Drawing and seeing allow, if not demand, that you live in the moment, see the now, stop the chatter, and simply look. In the silence while you look, there is a peace and centering that can transform your life.
People celebrate the festival of Pongal marking both the withdrawal of the rain and also the harvest. These festivities are spread over several days and are linked with major house cleaning and burning of junk, symbolizing the destruction of evil. The family gets rid of all the useless things by throwing them into a bonfire that is lit before sunrise to symbolize a new beginning, getting rid of the old. The women and young girls trace decora-
If very strong light effects, such as sunlight, or a dark interior lit by on2e076brilliant window, are attempted, the values will be found to be much simpler and more harsh, often resolving themselves into two masses, a brilliant light contrasted with a dark shadow. This tone arrangement of strong light in contrast with dark shadow was a favourite formula with many schools of the past, since Leonardo da Vinci first used it. Great breadth and splendour is given by it to design, and it is one of the most impressive of tone arrangements. Leonardo da Vinci's Our Lady of the Rocks, in the National Gallery, is an early example of this treatment. And Correggio's Venus, Mercury, and Cupid, here reproduced, is another particularly fine example. Reynolds and many of the eighteenth-century men used this scheme in their work almost entirely. This strong light and shade, by eliminating to a large extent the half tones, helps to preserve in highly complete work a simplicity and directness of...
Do you want to learn to draw You may have a feeling that you're meant to draw, that it could be fun, and might even become a significant part of your life. Your desire may even be a passionate one, as though you're being led to it by an invisible force. After all, our ancestors drew with rudimentary tools on the walls of caves, so there's historical precedent for our impulse to draw. Maybe you've had a secret (or not so secret) wish for art in your life, and now you feel ready to act on it. You may be a parent who, stimulated by your child's love of art, wants some of that creative joy for yourself. Or perhaps you're a teacher who wants to help budding artists in the classroom, or a retiree looking for a rewarding way to spend free time. You may want to learn drawing fundamentals as a way to open the door to other art forms, like painting.
