Smudging the Pencil

Pencil Sketches Photo Effects Tutorials

This drawing, done in Ferdinand Petrie's studio, illustrates the effect you can get by smudging the pencil. He used a 2B pencil, varying the pressure, and then used a paper stump (or smudging. Many of the lighter tones were done with the stump itself.

At right is the same drawing done on-the-spot. He used 6H and 4H pencils for the light values, 2H and HB pencils for the middle tones, and a 4B for the dark tones. The artist feels Ihis drawing has a much nicer quality because the individual strokes can be seen.
