You need a working knowledge of Painter to use this book to your greatest advantage. It is assumed that you know the basic operation of the program and where to access different menus and features. If you do not have this knowledge, you might find following along frustrating.
You need a computer that is capable of running Painter; this includes a large hard drive of around 250 gigabytes to save multiple versions of each painting. You should have a stylus and tablet to follow the tutorials; trying to follow along with the mouse would be a lot like painting with a bar of soap. Finally, whether you work on a Mac or PC does not matter, because the programs work virtually the same on each platform.
