Grass and weeds that grow around barns are different from the growth under trees. Here there are more weeds, probably from the seeds in the hay. To capture this unkempt, weedy look, begin as you did the previous grass drawing. After drawing the barn boards, take an HB pencil and add your mixture of grass and weeds. Keep your strokes more irregular than before, with some strokes much lighter than others, and some bending and curving to the left and right. You are creating mayhem, not uniformity. When you have formed your weeds, use a sharpened 2B pencil to add definition. Include a few dots on the ends of some of the larger weeds to indicate dried seeds or flowers.

The small tree on the left has lighter bark; therefore, make the grass darker. The tree on the right is lighter than the foreground tree, but it has a value that still requires the lighter grass. The slight difference in the tone of the two trees adds perspective to the drawing.

DRAWING ROCKS IN A FIELD

Many artists are fascinated with rocks and boulders. Their odd shapes and various colors are fun to draw, but be aware that rocks should appear firmly anchored in the ground, not sitting on top of it. This is done by making the darker values of the rocks hold the shape of the grass, just as you did with the old barn and the trees.

In the composition at right, the shape of the large rock in the foreground leads your eye to the left, where the small rock, partially silhouetted, attracts and stops you. The grass leads you back to the middle ground, where the rocks again direct you to the left and the background.

First, I make a quick thumbnail sketch to decide on an interesting arrangement of rock shapes and grass.

In my finished sketch, I start with a B graphite pencil to add tone to the rocks, letting the dark of the boulders hold the lighter grass shapes, and letting the darker grass shape the ground and the lighter rocks. To get some stronger darks here and there, I use a 2B pencil.
