Always keep your pencils sharpened to a fine point. A craft knife creates a longer, more tapering point than a pencil sharpener.
A putty eraser is more adaptable than a plastic eraser as you can mould it into a point to lift out any unwanted marks.
Seal the surface of all your finished drawings with a fixative to prevent the work smudging. Fixative is a resin that has been dissolved in a solvent, so that as the solvent dries on the surface of the paper the resin remains as a protective layer. Fixative is available in two formats: in a liquid form with a mouth diffuser, and in large or small spray cans.
