The four designs illustrate renewed possibilities for a ritual courtyard life corresponding with natural rhythms. This is true for buildings in general, but perhaps it is especially so for commercial offices where workers spend so much of their time in cities. Office buildings have generally been designed to keep workers at their desks, but laptop computers and cell phones now make it possible to move around. There is no reason why workers can't just as well do at least some of their work in a courtyard garden with flowers and trees, with the sounds of birds and water, and with winter sun to warm them and summer shade and breezes to cool them. Why not offer a choice of working inside or out, at a desk or on a garden bench The change of surroundings can make people more, not less productive. Clearly, different climates suggest alternative approaches but why deny the option where the setting makes it possible
For the laptop crowd, you obviously don't get the luxury of a comfy chair and desk combo (I guess it really depends on the type of coffee shop or bookstore you hang out in), but some of the above suggestions can still apply. First and foremost, try to find a table that's the right height for you (or grab a cheap foam-backed lap desk if you like working away from a table). You can always brace your tablet along the edge of the laptop (or on top of the keyboard) to assist in the hand-eye coordination, as well as save a bit of space if you happen to be working in a smaller area. Depending on how you set up your laptop and tablet, you might not have easy access to the available keyboard shortcuts. If that's the case, you can purchase a programmable minikeyboard to use. Or if you don't have the money to spend, grab an old game controller and do an online search for the program Joy2Key. That program can help you customize the controller's buttons to whatever keys or key combinations you...
Odds are you may already have the computer that best fits the environment you like working in. If not, and you have some money to invest, look into the right computer for you. If you happen to like working outside, purchase a good laptop that you can take anywhere. If you prefer working at home, a solid desktop machine will be fine. (Or if you already have a laptop, look into a docking station and treat it like a desktop.) Another option, especially for those that prefer to work on the go, is a tablet PC. While there are various types of tablet PCs on the market, they all have one thing in common They're all laptops with screens you can draw directly upon. Compared to the Cintiq, tablet PCs have much lower pressure sensitivity (256 levels) and no programmable keys. Oh. and they're only for PC (although the third-party Apple Modbook should be out by time this book sees print, so you Apple users may be in for some luck). But, most Tablet PCs cost about the same as or less than the...
Personally, I thank my family for holding my hand through life my parents, who made me in more ways than one, and my terrific husband, who makes all my dreams come true. My art family the Greeley Art Association, my wonderful watercolor classes, and my business partners at the Showcase Art Center. All of you tolerated my whines and constant use of the laptop.
The edges of the table and the base of the laptop share the same two vantage points. They are outside the paper, to the top left and the top right. There's also a third vantage point for all vertical edges (such as the leg of the table and the sides of the bottle), far down. Start with the basic shapes a flat box for the table, another one for the base of the laptop. And just like Juan Gris, we're going to make a bottle out of a cylinder. Some construction lines end in an arrow if the drawing were bigger, these lines would be longer and meet at the vanishing point. I've drawn crosses on the laptop base and screen to find the line that runs right through the middle. I use this line to place the latch, and to determine where the curve at the top of the screen reaches its highest point. More guidelines towards the vantage points are used to draw the keyboard and the trackpad.
Basic digital requirements will always include a computer and the biggest decisions will always start with making the choice between buying a PC or Apple Mac and choosing between desktop or laptop. Personal preference will dictate which route is taken, but considering a portable machine is worthwhile. Being able to work at the studio and in the home, as well as working and making presentations on the move, is a major bonus, Laptop computers can be locked away overnight to avoid theft and can be plugged into large desktop monitors when a larger working area is needed. They may have less raw power than a desktop model, but for most illustrators they are more than adequate.
