Dimensioning cams

Figure 24.12 shows a cam in contact with a roller follower; note that the point of contact between the cam and the roller is at A, on a line which joins the centres of the two arcs. To dimension a cam, the easiest method of presenting the data is in tabular form which relates the angular displacement 0 of the cam with the radial displacement R of the follower. The cam could then be cut on a milling machine using these point settings. For accurate master cams, these settings may be required at half- or one-degree intervals.
