The Muscles a Fthe Face

Face Contour Lines

The eye is set slightly be tow the bridge of the nose.

When I was starting out, I tried to make my comic book heads look coo!—I added lots of lines to the faces that didn't mean anything. I was just guessing where the lines should go. The result was comic book heads that were too busy.

The creases of the face are an outward reflection of the inner musculature. Familiarize yourself with the muscles of the face (marked with striations), and then you won't be guessing anymore where the lines go+ As a result of this understanding, your drawings will take on a new authority. And then you will rule the world! ... Or something like that.

The head slopes down slightly from the rear to the crown of the forehead.

The Tough Guy'sUndy

Looks like this guy needs a life outside the gym. Well, he's not going to get one—not if I can help it!

The more muscles you give a character, the bumpier the body's outline becomes. Look at the speed bumps down this guy's arms, for example. The trapezius muscles {between the neck and shoulders) are first, then the deltoids (shoulder muscles), then the triceps (in the upper arms), and finally, the brachioradialis for those of you who speak fluent Latin (the forearm muscles).

It's not important that you memorize all of the different muscles but that you begin to notice, and compartmentalize in your mind, the various muscle groups. Don't be overwhelmed, tf all you get at first glance is an understanding of how the upper leg muscles attach to the knee muscles, that's a great start. Take it piecemeal—chest, shoulders, calves, abdomen, forearms, hips, and so on. That's how the muscles are arranged—in groups.

Muscle Groups
The basic muscle groups are sketched in, as are the sweeping tines that connect them, especially in the legs>

"Hidden "Muscles

There are some muscles that only become visible in certain positions, for example when an arm is raised. When the arm is down, certain muscles are obscured. One such muscle is the teres major.

LAYERING Of MUSCLE GROUPS

It's important to understand which muscles lay on top of which. This leads to a greater sense of definition, depth, and clarity in your drawings,

1. Teres major

2. Latissimus dorsi

3. Rib cage

4. Obliquus externus

(or "love handles" in slang)
